Chapter Eleven

Welcome to your new home

It was late in the evening when the plane finally touched down at the airstrip near CFB Suffield in South East Alberta. The plane pulled up close to the end of the runway and the contents loaded on to a deuce truck. Once established that the area was clear of unauthorised people, the aliens too filed out of the plane and into awaiting deuces. It was a short drive to the Quonset hut, but right by there was the bunker which was to become the home of the aliens for the remainder of their lives. The tarps were down so no one on base could see the aliens, but the aliens really wanted to see the base. The first to file out of the deuces were the soldiers who were briefed on how they would escort the aliens into the bunker that was a short distance away. Then the aliens could get settled in for the night and the soldiers could get some bed rest before returning in the morning to see them again. One last army truck was made available to transport the pilots to their temporary quarters for the night.

Captain Logan and his soldiers were relieved in knowing that they would still get to see their friends at the very least for one more day. So, Captain Logan and the Warrant Officer took a few minutes to familiarize themselves with the bunker. Where was the bedrooms, bedding facilities, common rooms, etc. Then they returned to the back of the plane, and together with the remaining soldiers, they escorted their friends into the trucks and onto the bunker. The pilots who were confined to their cockpit and were convinced it was because the satellite needed to be moved into the building adjacent to the bunker, were now free to leave the aircraft.

After some time underground, the soldiers left to go into their temporary barrack to wash up and have the first real shower in one year. At Devon Island they did have an ablutions area set up for field showers, but that is never the same. The base had made arrangements to have a mess hall open late that night, so they could have a nice fresh meal. The cooks didn’t know anything about this group, but they did know that they should make it special. The cooks did not disappoint them at all. Later, they retired to the barracks for their first sleep in a real bed in over one year. Not one had to be up for picket, or watch, and they were all asleep within minutes.

Reveille was at 0600 and then the PPCLI soldiers had their first PT in over one year. Although when they were at Devon Island they were working hard, and their overall strength was just as good as before their deployment, the running part of the PT was far below their own expectations. Still they completed it. After the run, they showered and put on their properly cleaned uniforms.
